Twitter had become a popular way for those in Iran to express there protests against the controversial election that took place last month, which lead to severe unrest in the country. Those controlling the Habitat twitter account abused the most talked about topic by adding tags such as “#MOUSAVI” to drive more traffic to there special offers.

Twitter is quickly becoming the fastest growing social network on the net, and has been pounced on by everyone from marketing companies to news channels. The upmarket furniture retailer Habitat were also spotted using popular tags such as “iPhone” and “apple” in its messages. Here is the one that called the biggest contraversy:

“HabitatUK: #MOUSAVI Join the database for free to win a £1,000 gift card.” Mir Hossein Mousavi was controversially defeated in the Iran elections last month.

In a statement the Furniture Store Habitat have now offered “a very sincere apology to any users who were offended by last week’s activity on Twitter. This was absolutely not authorised by Habitat. We were shocked when we discovered what happened and are very sorry for the offence that has been caused.”
