A sofa formally owned by British wartime Priminister Winston Churchill has been sold for £7,500 at a furniture auction, after nearly ending up in a skip.

Churchils Sofa

The old and tatty sofa was valuated at £80 when found in a shed in Northamptonshire after the previous owner died. The furniture auctioneer said the sofa would have to be disposed of as it was no longer usable but changed his mind when the owner’s brother remarked that it was a shame since it had once belonged to none other than Winston Churchill.

The buyer, a Englishman living in South Africa, has instructed for the sofa to be restored before delivered.

“We were going to throw it away but when the chap mentioned its Churchill link, we thought we’d run it for a bit of a laugh. It shows the high regard with which Churchill is still held throughout the world. And so much for the global credit crunch. Everything is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.” Jonathan Humbert, JP Humbert Auctioneers.

I think this trumps most of the sofas in our previous article.
